The Yubes

Part of my current writing gig consists of researching local activities to include in our yearly travel guides. I absolutely love this aspect of the job. It taps into my love of writing, travel, and insatiable need for discovery all at once.

With the world being the way it is right now, we can’t exactly recommend this-or-that restaurant, museum, or event for all the obvious reasons. So instead, we’ve been promoting entirely outdoor activities, which makes the undertaking a little weirder, but also way more fun.

When we heard about a yoga retreat taking place in the woods nearby, it sounded perfect. It checked the “safe outdoor activity” box while also being a cool way of providing people with a much-needed sense of zen, especially after the year we’ve all had.

Apparently, the retreat grounds also double as a commune where a small community of people live full-time. They all coexist in perfect harmony with one another, living off the land while also tending what they referred to as their “foliage field” (aka, giant weed farm).

This way of living has always fascinated me. I know it was commonplace in the 60s and 70s, but to think there’s people who still live like this, and to actually get a chance to experience it firsthand was intriguing.
